A brief history of Tor

2/1/2023

Tor (The Onion Router) is a free, open-source software for enabling online anonymity and censorship resistance. It was initially developed by the US Naval Research Laboratory in the mid-1990s and later released as a non-profit organization, the Tor Project, in 2006. The Tor network was designed to protect US intelligence communications online and has since become a widely used tool for promoting privacy and freedom of speech on the internet. By routing internet traffic through a worldwide volunteer network of servers, Tor makes it difficult for third parties to trace the origin of the data and track users' online activities.
